I should have gotten the job!
I’m trying to deal with my feelings of disappointment, anger, frustration, and hurt. I just found out my co-worker got a senior position I also applied for. I really do like my co-worker and I am happy for her, but I am much more qualified and experienced than she is, so don’t understand why she got the job over me. It’s going to be very difficult to go into work next week.

I’m sorry. That’s a crappy situation. Perhaps you felt like you were the most qualified, but maybe the decision was made by not only your boss, but a few consultants. Whatever the situation, they felt differently and I can empathize with this taking a blow to your self-esteem. If you feel so strongly about it, maybe you could have an honest discussion with your boss. Tell him/her you respect the decision that was made to appoint “Becky” to the position, but that you are a little disappointed as you have worked very hard to become as experienced as you are. Ask him/her if there’s any skills you can sharpen, improvements you can make, so that you may be seriously considered for the next available senior position. This will show your boss that you can be gracious and accept their decisions, while also reminding him/her that you are dedicated to the company and want to advance. I’m sure he/she will definitely think of you next time around. Until then, try not to beat yourself up. You aren’t alone in this situation. I’m sure you will get your turn. Keep up the good work.
