I can’t do anything

I want to get into a good school so much to pursue my dreams, but my grades are too average. And worse than that, even though I want to study so badly, I’ll drift away and find myself wasting hours at a time. Then I’ll realize it and cut myself as punishment. It never works. The cycle continues.
I’ll often find myself thinking of all the things I should have done but didn’t. It depresses me to the point of hysteria.
I can’t talk to my friends about it; they’ll laugh or think I’m a crybaby. I can’t tell my parents; they don’t believe in depression.

Stop punishing yourself. You know what, maybe your brain isn’t cut out for the academic stuff, lots of people’s aren’t. What ARE you good at? Do that for a living.

If you are hell bent on going to school but can’t get in, do your first two years at a community college to get your grades up. That’s what those places are for. Also, you can get a great education at a state school or less well known liberal arts college, its all about the effort you put in.

Finally, talk to a counselor or an adult who won’t belittle your problems (a teacher, a coach, a pastor?) It sounds like you need some serious support.

Try not to worry about your grades. What ever school you get into will be fine because employers mainly are concerned that you have a degree, not from where your degree comes. Putting so much pressure on yourself is adding to your depression. What do you want to do with your future degree? Focus on making plans to do whatever that is and try not to focus so much falling short gradewise. It might be a good idea for you to see a therapist. Your school can probably refer you to someone if they don’t have anyone in house that you want to see. Also, whatever school you want to go to may not have the high grade expectations you think they do. Grades do mean as much as having something about you personally that stands out. Instead of being mad at yourself for wasting time not studying, look into finding some kind of volunteer activity that you can put on your application and job resume. Good luck.

I work as a Human Resource Rep at a HUGE pharma company. Trust me, I have grads from Stanford, Harvard, Berkley, etc. We don’t hire them where they got their education from…I myself graduated from NY State, and to be truthful, it’s who you know and your work experience. As long as you have a healthy work experience and are outgoing…we will hire you. Good Luck. Trust me, a B.A from this ghetto university is the same B.A from a prestigious, more expensive schoool.

You sound so much like me! I know this will sound weird but you probably have A.D.D. For years I had the same issues, average grades that I had to work my butt off for BTW, wasting time not meaning to, etc. when I got tested at 30, my doctor told me that my depression was a RESULT of my A.D.D.! I started taking medicine and it was as if someone put glasses on my brain lol. Get tested!
